The popularity of adjustable beds has increased significantly in recent years, and for good reason. More people are tapping into the idea of customizing their sleep experience as a key part of their overall well-being, and advancements in tech and manufacturing have made these beds both feature-rich and more affordable.
Yes, they are more expensive than traditional bed frames, but, especially if you suffer from chronic pain or other conditions, there may be no luxury more worth the cost. Beyond being able to raise and lower your head and feet for the most comfortable positions for sleep, watching TV, and reading, adjustable beds offer a range of other features, including massagers, charging ports, and even under-bed-lighting.
Our team has rigorously evaluated dozens of adjustable beds in our Seattle-based Test Lab to determine which ones are the best out there. (And if you’re looking for a new mattress to go with your adjustable bed, our guides to the best mattresses for back pain and best mattresses for side sleepers can help, too.)

What Is an Adjustable Bed and Who Is It Best for?
Adjustable bed frames let you raise and lower your head and/or legs while in bed. This can help ease back pain and improve circulation — and many people also find the customizable positions make lounging in bed just plain better.
Many of these beds come with wireless remote controls so you can change positions with the click of a button, and many feature special characteristics like metal bars and hooks that help keep the mattress in place when the bed changes position. Some models let bed partners adjust their sides separately, and some offer even more tricked-out features like built-in massage capabilities, snore detection, and USB ports.
(Keep in mind that adjustable beds are different from adjustable mattresses: Adjustable mattresses, also known as airbeds, have air chambers inside that let you add or remove air to change how the sleep surface feels. Most airbeds are compatible with adjustable bed bases, but you can also use an adjustable base with foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses.)
Adjustable Bed Pros
- Fully customizable positions for the head and legs
- Helps ease pain and improve circulation
- Most have dual adjustment capabilities for bed partners
- Many have additional features like massagers, under-bed-lighting, and charging ports
Adjustable Bed Cons
- Typically expensive compared with standard bed frames
- Usually heavy and hard to move
- Rarely come with a sleep trial
What to Look for in an Adjustable Bed
Shopping for an adjustable bed can be intimidating, especially if you’ve never bought one before. But we’re here to help clarify the options.
Off the bat, you’ll want to look for an adjustable bed that has customizable options for both upper and lower body positions. You’ll also want to look out for additional features that matter to you, such as massage functionality, charging ports, adjustable bed height, and sleep-tracking capabilities —even snore-reduction features. Of course, price is another key factor for many adjustable bed shoppers.
Most foam, latex, airbed, and hybrid mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds. If you live with pain, an adaptive mattress with a softer surface that contours closely to your body can help provide relief — and these work with adjustable beds.
Do note that some mattresses may be too thick for an adjustable bed. As well, know that twin-size adjustable beds can be harder to find and more expensive.
Most adjustable beds have a weight capacity of 600 to 1,000 pounds —which includes you and any bed partner, plus the weight of the mattress. If you exceed the stated weight capacity, you can damage the bed and also void your warranty.
Adjustable beds can be pricey, typically ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Naturally, models with more bells and whistles typically cost more. The bed price typically includes free in-home setup. (But if it doesn’t, you’ll have to assemble and set up the bed yourself — and that can be a tricky task.)
Some companies —typically online sellers — offer in-home trial periods. For others, all sales are final with no returns offered after the purchase date. Be sure to check with each company to see what their policy is before you buy.
How to Shop for an Adjustable Bed
These are some of the key features to look for when you’re shopping for an adjustable bed.
Body adjustment: This is the defining feature of an adjustable bed and allows you to customize the position of your upper and lower body. The range of motion will vary by bed model. People with back pain can especially benefit from the zero-gravity position, which refers to a position in which the legs are elevated above the head, and which gives a feeling of weightlessness.
Remote controls: Wireless remotes come standard with most adjustable beds, and allow you to customize your bed position without getting up. You can also save your favorite positions as presets. Some higher-end adjustable beds have smart features that you can adjust using a mobile app.
Split adjustment: Split adjustable beds are divided down the middle, so you and your bed partner can each customize your own position. Split queen, split king, and split California king are the sizes most typically offered.
Customizable height: Many adjustable beds have legs that can be customized for height, usually from about 6 to 12 inches. This allows you to either sleep lower to the floor or to raise up the bed higher for under-bed storage.
Smart technology: Some adjustable beds come with smart features. These might include massage programming options, silent alarms that wake you up gently with motion instead of noise, or even anti-snoring features that elevate the head when snoring is detected.
Sleep tracking: Some adjustable beds offer sleep-tracking tools with the help of sensors embedded in the frame. These sensors can track metrics like breathing, heart rate, movement during sleep, and time spent asleep. You can review and interact with the data the bed collects using a companion app.
Snoring prevention: According to data from roughly 160,000 Sleep Foundation profiles, roughly 20% of sleepers regularly snore and more than two-thirds occasionally snore. Whether it happens often or less frequently, snoring can disrupt sleep for you and your partner. Some newer adjustable beds come equipped with automatic anti-snore response. Sensors in the bed detect when you’re snoring, and the bed automatically elevates your head to open up your breathing passages. If you or your partner snore, an adjustable bed with automatic anti-snore response might be a feature to prioritize.
Where to Buy an Adjustable Bed
Adjustable beds are sold both online and in stores. If you buy in-store, you may get a trial period to test your bed in your home before you commit to the purchase. And while trial periods are offered less commonly for online adjustable bed purchases, you’ll often save money if you buy online because overhead costs are lower for web-based businesses than for brick-and-mortars.
If you’ve been prescribed an adjustable bed for a medical condition, your insurance or Medicare may cover part or all of the cost of your purchase. Be sure to contact your carrier directly to determine your eligibility before you buy.
How We Test
We’re committed to helping our readers choose the best sleep products for their needs and wants. Our product testing team in our Seattle-based Test Lab brings decades of knowledge and experience to these hands-on evaluations, and our team represents a wide range of body types and sleep positions to ensure our findings are inclusive of all sleepers.
Every adjustable bed shopper has their own specific preferences and needs. Our testing team sticks to an objective rating system to bring you the strengths, weaknesses, and defining characteristics of a range of adjustable beds to help you choose the one that’s right for you.
We personally evaluate every adjustable base using the same performance criteria. Below are the guidelines we use for each step of our four-part testing process.
Construction analysis: We start our testing with a thorough analysis of each adjustable base’s design. We look at features like range of motion for position changes, size options, ease of assembly, and special features.
Product testing: To test adjustable bases, we take turns operating each bed to gauge the ease of operation, noise, and how comfortable it feels in different sleep positions. We make sure to use the same mattress for each base as a control measure.
Field testing: Our field testers use adjustable bases in their own homes, collecting data over the course of several weeks. This helps us determine how the bases perform night after night in a real-world setting, as well as their compatibility with different types of mattresses.
User testing: Data from verified adjustable base owners helps us fine-tune our initial ratings to further reflect people’s experience with the beds in the real world. We collect user feedback from surveys, sleep stories, and customer reviews.
